Community

Serve Christ in the community

Serving shifts your focus off of yourself onto others in your community. You begin to see others as Jesus sees them – and see Jesus in others. Jesus said, “...Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25: 40 NRSV)

Project Transformation

Get on board with the life changing work of Project Transformation, the Christ-centered summer day camp for children that emphasizes relationships and reading. St. Mark's Food Bank

St. Mark's operates a Food Bank in Room 407/409 which provides food boxes to those in our neighborhood and community needing food assistance. Each box contains meat, peanut butter and jelly, soups, macaroni & cheese, oatmeal, spaghetti sauce, pasta, fruits and vegetables, and more, plus an invitation to worship at St. Mark's UMC.

The Food Bank Ministry Team manages the Food Bank week to week, keeping the shelves organized, packing boxes as needed, and hosting food-packing and distribution events. New servants are always welcome on the team.

Donations to the Food Bank are welcome Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday mornings. For a complete list of items that are always needed, click here (TBA). All food donated must be within its expiration date.

St. Mark's congregation is invited to bring particular food items on 1st Sundays as a means of preparing our hearts for Holy Communion. Watch St. Mark's Newsletter and Facebook page for more information.

Food boxes are available 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday at the church; there is no delivery available.

Habitat for Humanity

Being involved in Habitat for Humanity is one way our congregation helps meet the need for affordable housing in our community, plus it allows us to experience hands-on missions right here in our own backyard. Habitat for Humanity provides a hand-up rather than a hand-out, and has a rock-solid foundation and history of success.

At St. Mark's, our involvement with Habitat takes many different forms, including:

  • In the Spring and Fall, St. Mark's men and women work on home builds in tandem with their new owners on dates coordinated with Habitat.
  • St. Mark's has been involved in one-day panel builds that construct the walls for a new home.
  • Several of our church members have become regular volunteers with Habitat, working alongside volunteers from other churches.
  • St. Mark's partners annually with Habitat as a "Blueprint Sponsor," giving $5000 toward a particular home build.
  • St. Mark's has also sponsored its own home build through Habitat for Humanity with a $40,000 gift.
  • Individual members and families in our church have also become sponsors of homes through Habitat for Humanity.
