Listed below are current ministries that need additional volunteers. If you would be interested in volunteering or would like more information please call Paul Givens, Coordinator of Volunteer Ministries, at 893-3455.
- Administrative Team
Aren’t we blessed to have willing souls that help our busy office staff manage incoming calls and visitors? It helps free our church staff to keep things running smoothly throughout the week. By having our Administrative Team help direct visitors and phone calls throughout the workday, we are able to give each inquiry the specific and prompt attention it deserves. The team members work one 4 hour shift a week from 8 a.m. to noon or noon - 4 p.m. They like to keep an active “substitute list” for the times when one of the regular volunteers cannot work their assigned shift for some reason. There are often light duties to keep you occupied between receiving calls or visitors and the phone system is very simple to operate. If you are interested in being a member of the Administrative Team, please contact Kathryn in the church office. Thanks so much to all these team members!
- Birthday Card Ministry
Don’t you enjoy receiving warm wishes on your birthday from St. Mark’s? Thanks to those who take turns preparing cards to go out to all our members on their birthdays. If you would like to be a part of this team, call Natalie Beckman @ 893-1233.
- Car Repair Ministry
This team is available for church members (or others in need) to contact for information about a particular problem they may be having with their automobile. A team member will meet with the church member, inspect the automobile, advise the church member on the problem and provide a rough estimate of the potential costs to repair.
The team member will not perform any repairs, they are in an advisory capacity only. The team member may have knowledge of a reputable mechanic and may refer that mechanic. The objective of the ministry is to provide some level of comfort to church members when the need arises to have their automobile repaired.
- Disaster Relief Team Ministry
This team responds to natural disasters throughout the Southeast. Equipment and transportation vehicles are maintained on the church property. The disaster trips normally range from three days to one week. The team provides water and offers assistance in home repair, specializing in tree removal. What a blessing to people in need! We should be proud to know that we are willing to witness to others through Christian love in this way. If you are interested in serving on this team from time to time, please call Paul Givens at the church.
- Furniture Ministry Team
Most of you are probably aware of our Furniture Ministry Team. What you might not know is that this team has been in existence for 17 years! Team members pick up furniture from various community members. This furniture is then delivered to economically disadvantaged families, burn outs and victims of domestic violence chosen from a large number of referrals from various community agencies. Team members work a rotating schedule (approximately every 6 weeks) on Saturdays from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. If you are interested in helping our church further our efforts to impact our community in one of the only services like it in Murfreesboro, please call Paul Givens. Thanks so much to those of you that are already supporting others through this ministry.
- Greeter Ministry
It is wonderful to watch our church continue to grow! With that growth, we must also be aware that we have new faces every Sunday morning. The members of this team maintain a
presence at the church entrances and narthex before each
service. They greet visitors and provide information about what St. Mark’s has to offer. We want to make sure we have a chance to welcome every visitor making them feel more comfortable while they are with us. It isn’t necessary to personally know all our members to offer your support in this ministry. If you might be willing to rotate on a schedule with this team, please call Dorothy Murphy (895-5805) or the church office. Thanks to those who already receive guests each week.
- Habitat for Humanity Ministry
Did you know that Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization to the elimination of inadequate and substandard housing around the world? They are not federally funded (except for the purchase of land) and need the support of their individual Christian communities to continue to make a difference in this part of the world. St. Mark’s should be very proud of our Habitat Roofing Team. The 7-8 member team puts the roof on every Habitat house that is built in Rutherford County (3 - 5 each year). Through experience and some new equipment purchased by the Habitat office, they can now finish a roof in one day. There are so many ways we can connect with this incredible Christian organization to help install a bright future for others in our community. If you are interested in helping on the roofing team, call Dave Roesler (849-9563). If you are interested in finding out other ways you can offer service to Habitat, please call Stacey Taylor (849-7798).
- Helping Hands Ministry
Remember the days of welcoming a new baby while trying to balance your life’s demands from before the new arrival? And on just a few hours of sleep? Well, Helping Hands Ministry remembers and they are here to offer any help that might be needed by these new baby challenges. Perhaps the new parent needs someone to entertain the older sibling(s) while they go for another doctor visit. Or maybe they would love to have dinner delivered to them one night a week for the first few weeks. Grocery shopping, errand running, or whatever the new parents need, Helping Hands is here to help. As our membership grows, so does our baby population. If this is something you would be interested in becoming involved in, please call Connie Walker at the church.
- Honey Do Ministry
Don’t let the name scare you! This ministry is offered to help elderly members of our community with minor repairs on their homes. It might be repairing a leaking pipe or changing a hard to reach light bulb. Actually, it is hard to explain what all might be on the Honey Do List. The small team considers any request and tries to help in any way that it can. If you are interested in finding out more about this ministry, please contact Billy Duke (890-8461). Thanks for offering your willing hands to others.
- Nursing Home Ministry
Volunteers currently only visit St. Mark's members. However, we plan to expand this ministry to non-members as well. The volunteers have a schedule that rotates the nursing home residents among the volunteers so that a different volunteer visits each month. A monthly report is prepared for the senior pastor for any necessary follow-up.
- Phone Ministry
Once again we see our growing church as a blessing that needs nurturing. Any first time visitor to St. Mark’s that fills out a registration card, will be contacted the following week by phone. We must be aware that the personal contact after the first visit could offer a message of welcome and also encourage a second visit. Members of this team are contacted with the names of any first-time visitors on Monday. They place a quick call offering a chance for the visitor to ask any questions about St. Mark’s. If you might have time to make these 1-2 phone calls once or twice a month, call the church office. We appreciate the time our present team members have given to welcome potential new members.
- Scouting Ministry
Did you know that Boy Scout Troop 398 presently has 88 scouts in membership? It is one of the biggest troops outside Nashville. They meet every Monday night at St. Mark’s and campout once a month taking one high adventure trip a year. They offer boys a Christian environment to enjoy friendship, outdoor skills, leadership, values and most of all, fun. Many adult volunteers are needed to provide a quality program for the scouts. They welcome your help—anything from teaching a skill for a few hours or taking a leadership position. If you are interested in lending a hand with the scouts, call Mike Warren (896-1994). We also offer a place for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts to meet and can get you information on scouting for any age.
- Shut-in Visitation Ministry
This is such an important ministry for so many of our members who cannot get to church on Sunday. These ministry team members visit people in nursing homes, assisted living, individual homes, rehab facilities or anywhere else they might be at that time. There are many ways to offer support in this area. Please contact the church to find out more information. Thanks so much to the team members who have diligently worked to make our shut-in members remain a part of our church life.
- Sitting and Respite Ministry
These team members offer their time to spouses or family caregivers of any homebound members. They simply provide a much needed break for members that might need constant companionship. They may decide to set up a specified time on a regular basis to come or may just come when the family asks for assistance. The needs vary from situation to situation but grant a special blessing to those families. If you would like to find out more information, please call the church. Much appreciation to those already offering loving help to these members.
- Video Ministry
Volunteers in this ministry operate video equipment and record one of the Sunday morning services. These tapes are then delivered to shut-ins and homebound members. They work on a rotating schedule and if you would like to be a part of this ministry that keeps immobile members a part of our weekly worship, call Diane Moran (867-8383) or contact the church office.
- Visitation Ministry
Volunteers in this ministry meet with first-time visitors in person to offer support, describe opportunities available at out church and explain church membership. Perhaps Ginny Flynn & Marge Voorhies even visited you when you first came to St. Mark’s. If you would like to help them in this outreach to new faces, call the church office. Thanks so much to Ginny and Marge for their years of service!
- Warm Welcome Ministry
Do you have any idea how many visitors attend our services each week? We are growing so large that it can be easy to miss those potential new members. We want everyone who visits St. Mark’s to feel welcome. Members of this team rotate duties. They are notified of each second time visitor by our Monday morning volunteer. Team members prepare a home-baked item and deliver it to these visitors with a warm welcome and an offer to answer any questions about our church. If you think you might want to be a part of this team, please call Eileen Chalmers @ 896-9528 or contact the church office.
