Children's Ministry

IT ONLY TAKES A SPARK!

St. Mark’s SPARK: ACTIVATE FAITH
for Children Age 2 – Kindergarten

St. Mark’s SPARK Sunday School helps young children experience God, meet their friend Jesus and come to know God’s Word as they walk through the key Old and New Testament Bible stories of the Bible.  Old Testament stories are studied in the fall quarter and the New Testament stories in the winter and spring quarters.

Your child can take the Bible stories home each Sunday in the beautiful SPARK Story Bible, used weekly in Sunday school and available for families to purchase for use at home for $20.00.  See Rev. Touchton about ordering a SPARK Story Bible for your growing young Christian!

Our Ages 2 and 3, Age 4 and Pre-K, and Kindergarten classes will begin their journey through the Bible this Sunday, August 13th, 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. in the classrooms listed below.  We hope to see your child in SPARK Sunday school!

Ages 2 and 3, Room 307

Age 4/Pre-K, Room 305

Kindergarten, Room 302

Classroom teachers, helpers and substitutes are always needed!  Excellent curriculum and all supplies are provided.  If you are willing to serve in this way, please speak to your child’s teacher or Rev. Martha Touchton.

IGNITING A BIBLICAL IMAGINATION THAT LASTS A LIFETIME
Beginning September 17th, children in Grades 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 will begin a new adventure called “Holy Moly!”   Holy Moly is a fun, playful and interactive approach to studying the Bible which follows the path of the biblical narrative, taking kids on a journey through the Old Testament in the Fall, Advent/Christmas/Epiphany stories in the Winter, and New Testament stories in the Spring, including Holy Week and Easter accounts.

One component of Holy Moly is an animated video of the Bible stories, which uses visuals and sound effects to give kids the opportunity to imagine and retell the story in their own words.   After a few minutes of gathering and introduction in each classroom at 9:45 a.m., all classes will gather in Room 211 at 10:00 a.m. to experience this video together, then return to their classrooms to continue the conversations.   As you gather at home on Sunday afternoons, I hope you will inquire with your children about what they experienced in Sunday school and keep the conversation going!

YOUR SERVICE IS NEEDED IN THE CLASSROOMS
Holy Moly requires minimal preparation and leaders do not need to be Bible experts to teach.   Teachers and Shepherds are needed in both the 1st/2nd grade and 3rd/4th grade classrooms.  You may serve one or two Sundays a month or for as many Sunday as you like!  A sign-up sheet will be posted in the hallway Sunday, August 27th.  Natalie Anderson will be coordinating teachers and shepherds for this class; to sign up now, email Natalie at kyleandsylvia@yahoo.com.

Welcome to 5th/6th Grade at St. Mark’s!

5TH AND 6TH GRADERS CONNECT FAITH AND LIFE
ON SUNDAY MORNINGS

Tweens entering Grades 5 & 6 are embarking on a year-long journey through the Bible on Sunday mornings, 9:45-10:45 in Room 212.  CONNECT helps tweens explore the relationship between the Old and New Testaments using videos, Bible exploration, and hands-on projects. Every Connect lesson follows a three-part sequence: See, Explore, and Make.  Each week, tweens focus on and reinforce a theme by watching a witty video, exploring biblical text, and creating projects that range from games to art and more.  You can learn more about CONNECT by visiting  https://www.wearesparkhouse.org/kids/connect/

CONNECT participants are encouraged to highlight and √markê in their Bibles during class!    The curriculum offers a special CONNECT BIBLE for $20.00 that also includes exploration exercises for each lesson; there is a sample Bible in the classroom.  Please let Rev. Touchton know ASAP if you would like to order one of these special Bibles for your 5th or 6th Grader!

We are blessed to have two EXCELLENT Bible teachers leading this class, Becky Latta and Samantha Daniel.   Additional parents are needed to serve as shepherds for this group, giving general assistance and support and ensuring that there are two adults present in the classroom at all times.   If you would be willing to serve in this way on a rotating basis, please contact one of the teachers or Rev. Martha to sign up.

WHAT ABOUT CONFIRMATION?

The 45-week confirmation study used last year, Colaborate, has three components: 15 weeks of study on the Old Testament, 15 weeks on the New Testament, and 15 weeks on the United Methodist Church.   Since the 6th graders are participating in the “CONNECT” study throughout the Sunday school year, all that remains for them to complete for confirmation is the section on United Methodism.

Becky Latta has graciously volunteered to head up this section of the confirmation study at another time other than Sunday mornings, beginning in 2018.  As in previous years, confirmands would also complete a service project and participate in other special events in preparation for confirmation.  In addition to our 6th graders, this class may also include a few 7th and 8th graders who missed confirmation in previous years.

Parent help and support will be needed for this endeavor as well.   Please let Becky Latta or Rev. Touchton know if you are interested in serving in a supportive role for this course in 2018.

Children’s Sermons, Worship Bags and Sermon Guides:   Each Sunday morning, all children are invited to gather at the front of the sanctuary for special story that helps them imagine and more fully comprehend the scriptural focus of the sermon.  Following the Children’s Message, children ages 4 – 7 may pick up a worship bag to enjoy during the sermon; this bag is full of coloring pages, activity sheets, manipulatives and other items that help keep little hands busy while little ears tune in to the sermon.   Older children who complete the Sermon Guide insert in the bulletin will receive a prize from Dr. Goff following worship; the children are encouraged to take their Sermon Guides home and talk about them further with their families.

W.N.P. for Children!   6:00 – 7:15 p.m. Wednesdays, September - April

W.N.P. for Children is a rotation model – children will travel with their age group to different activities throughout the evening.

In order to do so, we ask that there are no drop-ins, but rather that a parent contact Rev. Touchton prior to your child’s first visit. The Glee Club is open Sunday mornings, 9:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

It is the intent of the St. Mark’s community to provide an opportunity for ministry whenever possible, however severe weather may prevent this.

Our church policy is as follows: We understand that weather and road conditions may improve later in the day, but if the Murfreesboro City Schools are closed, all Wednesday night programming is cancelled.  During other times of the week, for those who are able to get here safely, meetings and programs will be held at the discretion of the chairperson or group leader.

The church office will be open if possible, though it may not be fully staffed for its’ regular hours.  Staff members will be available via e-mail.

In the event of a significant amount of ice or snow on a weekend, early service and Sunday school will be canceled. For those who are able to get here safely, we will have worship in the Sanctuary at 11:00.   Our website and Facebook page will give you the updated information. In addition, the staff of the church will communicate with their respective groups and classes via email, text, social media, or phone. Please check your communication devices for the latest update and information.
